What matters at this age

A baby who is not walking yet needs a shoe that stays on and does not get in the way. That is a short list.

1. It stays on
   An elastic at the ankle or a soft strap. A shoe that comes off in the stroller ends up under the stroller, and this is the one thing parents tell us about.

2. A sole that bends
   Soft-soled throughout. Nothing stiff under a foot that is still finding the floor.

3. It goes on easily
   A wide opening, because you are putting it on a foot that is not helping. Everything else is secondary.

About the size, and about the material

Sizes here are given by age in months, and babies do not follow that chart. Measure the foot and pick by length rather than by the age on the label, and leave a little room without leaving a lot.

Materials vary across this rack, so read the pair rather than the page. Fabric is the coolest for summer, faux leather wipes clean, and the few leather and synthetic suede pairs are the softest of the group.
