Boys' Loafers

Two pairs cover the year

Most families end up with the same two, and the second one gets worn far more than expected.

1. The dress pair
   Black, glossy or matte, for weddings and anything that gets photographed. It will be outgrown before it wears out, so the easy-clean version is the sensible one.

   Brown, navy or beige, in faux leather. This is the one that goes to school and comes back dusty, and it wipes clean in one pass.

Getting it to actually be worn

Let him put it on himself in the store or at the door, before anything else. A shoe a boy can manage alone is a shoe that gets chosen in the morning.

And check the heel. If it lifts when he walks, the pair is too big, and no amount of growing room makes up for a shoe that slaps.
