What makes a loafer work in summer

Three things, and only one of them is about how it looks.

1. A material that breathes
   Fabric first, then leather and suede. A sealed synthetic upper on a ninety-degree day is the one thing that will make you take the shoe off.

2. A low-cut opening
   Cut under the ankle bone so nothing rubs with bare feet. The boat shapes here are the ones built for it.

Wearing them without socks, and keeping them

Use a no-show liner. It is invisible, it stops the lining from absorbing an entire summer, and it is genuinely the difference between a pair that lasts one season and one that lasts three.

Rotate two pairs. A shoe worn two days running never dries out inside, and that is what finishes a summer loafer long before the outside gives up.
