Chunky Platform Loafers

A thick sole under the whole foot, so the height costs you nothing in balance. Two thirds of this rack is faux leather, the rest is leather, suede and glossy finishes. Mostly cut for women, with a few men's pairs.

Platform, or just a thick sole

The two get mixed up constantly, and they walk differently.

1. A true platform
   Sole thickness under the toe as well as the heel. Your foot stays level, so three inches of platform feels like a flat shoe.

2. A thick sole with a raised heel
   Chunky all over but taller at the back. It gives a little lift to the posture and reads slightly dressier.

3. The lug tread
   Most of these soles are notched deeply. That is the part that actually matters in November, more than anything on the upper.

Getting the proportion right

A chunky sole needs some volume above it. Wide-leg pants, a straight jean, a heavier coat. Under a slim ankle-length pant it can look like the shoe arrived on its own.

The other thing to check is the weight. A thick rubber sole is heavier than it looks on a screen, and you feel it on the third mile, not the first.
