Why suede looks the way it does

The nap is the whole story. It is a short raised surface that catches light differently depending on which way you stroke it.

1. Deeper color
   Navy, brown, green and gray all read richer in suede than in anything else. Most of the good color in the shop lives on this rack.

2. Less formality
   Matte takes the edge off any shape. A suede tassel loafer goes with jeans, the same shoe in shiny leather does not.

3. A nap that needs standing up
   Thirty seconds with a dry brush after each wear, always in the same direction. That is the entire routine, and skipping it is what leaves a flat shiny patch at the toe.

3 mistakes to avoid when buying suede loafers

1. Making it your only pair
   Suede and a wet commute do not go together. Own a faux leather or glossy pair for those days, and the suede one stays good for years.

2. Starting with a pale color
   Light gray, sand and beige suede are the prettiest and the quickest to show a mark. A deep brown or navy is the sensible first suede.

3. Reaching for water on a stain
   Water is what marks suede in the first place. Dry brush first, let it dry fully, brush again, and only then think about anything stronger.
