Faux Leather Loafers

The biggest rack in the shop by some margin, and the one most orders come from. Faux leather gives you the line and the finish of a leather loafer without the price, and without the two weeks of breaking in. Just over half of it is women's, with a solid men's shelf and a real kids' section.

What faux leather is good at

It is not trying to pass for hide. Three things it does better than hide does.

1. Price
   The same shape and the same finish for a fraction of the cost. This is the rack you buy the second pair from, the one you only wear on Fridays.

2. Day one
   No breaking in. A faux leather upper is the same on the first morning as on the fiftieth, so what you try on is what you get.

3. Rain
   Water sits on the surface instead of soaking in. A shower on the way to the office is a wipe with a cloth, not an evening spent drying.

And what it asks in return

It does not breathe the way hide does. On a hot day your foot knows it, so think of this as the spring and autumn rack rather than the middle of August. Fabric and suede are the better call in real heat.

And it does not want leather care. No cream, no polish, no wax: they sit on the surface and dull it. A damp cloth, then a dry one, and that is the whole routine.
