White Loafers

Close to a hundred and fifty pairs for women, men and kids, and nearly half of them faux leather. That is the right material for white, because the whole question with a white shoe is how easily it comes clean.

White is a maintenance decision

Choose the material first and the shape second. On a white shoe, nothing else matters as much.

1. Faux leather, about half the rack
   A damp cloth and one pass. This is the white that survives a summer, and the one we would recommend without hesitation.

2. Leather, about a fifth
   Cleans well too, and cream will cover a scuff a cloth will not. Slightly more work, and it ages better.

3. Fabric, for summer
   The coolest option and the one that absorbs a spill rather than shrugging it off. Best kept for dry, warm days.

3 mistakes to avoid when buying white loafers

1. Choosing white suede
   It is the one combination we would talk you out of. Pale suede marks on the first wet sidewalk and the mark stays.

2. Waiting to clean them
   A mark wiped the same evening comes off. The same mark wiped in three weeks has settled in. Two minutes at the door is the whole trick.

3. Forgetting the sole edge
   The white strip around the base is what actually looks dirty from a distance, and it is the part people never clean. A cloth and a bit of patience along that edge changes the whole shoe.
