Why these pairs and not others

Three things come back again and again in what sells. A soft sole you can wear all day without thinking about it. A color that works with what is already in the wardrobe, which in practice means black, brown, beige and navy. And a shape that is neither office-strict nor too casual, so one pair covers most of the week.

The exceptions are worth noticing. A leopard print and a bright tassel sit near the top of this page, which tells you something simple: when someone buys a second pair, they stop playing safe.

Buying from a bestsellers page

A popular pair is a safer bet on fit, because the sizing has been tried by thousands of feet before yours. It is also the pair most likely to run out in the middle sizes, so if yours is on the page, it is worth not waiting.
